CRAIL MAIL #4
As always, these letters are pulled from all the emails we get at the Girl Family of companies. If you write us, it may end up in here. We WILL run your email address unless you request us NOT to. We figure this is a decent way of networking the Crail Tappers out there... so that when you are called to duty, you'll be prepared. Or something like that. Write us. -- Captain Sanger

THE MYSTERY
From: questionable92@hotmail.com
Date: 12/2/00
I'm guessing Crail Tap is made up of the Girl art department... I was wondering if I could ask you a few things, like what else do you guys do? How many people work on the staff? How did you get started? How's it going with shit? Did you people get hooked up 'cause you rip or what, did you go to art school, do you skate at all? Are you expanding, will you do art for other people, are you all just freelancing? What kind of background do you guys have (galleries, other jobs and the like)? Are you all a bunch of old fucks? What's the deal? And why was Koston's name misspelled in the credits of the Questionable video, and who is Eric Eastman... get back to me, I got a lot more.

Jesus, James. You think we have time to answer all those and you want to send MORE? -- Carl

LITTLE BASTARDS
From: penta@olis.net.au
Subject: shit

Hi Girl and Chocolate men,
Just have something I wanted to ask about. Why is the Rushmore movie soundtrack nearly identical to the Chocolate Tour's soundtrack. I reckon somebody copied somebody or something sinister like that. Then, lo and behold, I see a "Last Call" segment in Big Brother with that little bastard from the movie. Anyway that's all.
-- J.Allen, somewhere in Australia

Is it? I never noticed. That "little bastard" you're refering to is a good friend to the Girl family, Jason Schwartzman. And I doubt he had anything to do with the soundtrack since he was too busy acting in the movie. But still, if anyone has a list of cuts available for both Rushmore and The Choco Tour, write them down and send them in... it would be interesting to compare. -- Carl

STILL WRONG
From: tchon@prodigy.net
Subject: Guy's picture from crailtap #2

I was looking on Crail Tap #3, and in the letters section read one person's attempt to name the two spectators in the background. I looked at the linked-to-picture and decided to give it a shot myself. As the previous person already guessed, I think the one on the far right of the photo is Chico Brenes. As for the other guy, he could possibly almost maybe sort of be Eric Koston. I'm not to sure, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. Anyway, you all are really doing a good job with everything at Crail Tap, and I can't wait to sport a fresh new Crail Tap t-shirt whenever the store opens (when will it be, by the way?).
-- Tommy McCutchon
P.S. Girl boards are perfect the way they are now, and, if they are ever made to have the dreaded kill-your-feet-concave that everyone else uses, I will be forced to either quit skateboarding forever or start my own company, which I would rather not have to do just so I can ride decent skateboards.

Wrong again Tommy. Yes, that is Chico, but the other lad is still in question. —C

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
From: osiris@nycmail.com
Subject: jobs

CRAILTAP,
First I wanna let you know how much I love all your products. They are all I've been riding for a long time. Now to my main message: I know that skateboarding as a whole has really blown up and I was wondering what kind of job opportunities are available in the skate industry. I'm graduating high school next year and I want my life and career to stay involved with skating. My parents are stressing college, and I have no idea what I want to be. I would love to have a job with one of the major skate companies, especially Girl. Yall have the skate industry on lock right now with boards, trucks, shoes, clothes, even a girl's clothing line. If you could give me info on what kind of jobs are out there, what type of training is needed, and what I can do now to get involved in them I would really appreciate it.
-- Derek Blackwell, Victoria, Texas
P.S. I'm just wondering, is Sheffey coming thru with a full length part in the new vid. He's my fav rider.

Jobs... ugh. Gotta have them to survive in this dog-eat-dog consumer capitol. Jobs in skateboarding are like any other -- meaning, there are a whole variety to be had, but they may be hard to get. Sometimes, it's who you know and where you live. Obviously, California is the place to be for the skate industry in the United States. So it helps if you live here; either SF (Thrasher, Indy territory), San Diego (Transworld, DC, etc.) or LA (World and Girl). A lot of the people working here at the Girl Cos came from skateshops... an excellent breeding ground to learn about the industry. A good foot in the door. Then you gotta ask yourself what it is you want to do; sales, managing, accounting, manufacturing, data input, human resources, hairdresser, warehouse, art/design, production, chef, president... know about the area you want to work in. If it means going to college (business, engineering, design, etc), well... If not... I just took too long to say, "there are different routes for everyone. Choose and go forth in the wilderness." -- Carl

Hey Crailers, I'm loving your stuff here in the UK. I'm a skater & MTV presenter & stand-up comic, and I wear your shit (Girl, Fourstar, Chocolate) daily, to educate a huge TV audience.
Attached is a picture which tells quite a cool story... broadcasting live for MTV across the whole of Europe with Mr. Wyclef Jean and the devil-eyed Swedish beauty Kicki Berg. Apart from landing a phat trick, things don't get much better... hence the shit-eating grin!
Keep it up -- I certainly intend to.

-- Naseem
P.S. Yeah I have an idea thingie, you guys should get 1 Girl/Chocolate rider to come to the crailchat like once every two weeks and warn everyone before so we can all go and the chatline will be more lively. I know it's not that easy but whatever!!! Peace out!!!

"Wow... really? Hail the Crail!!!" Is this an auto response? Matthew spent some hours drawing to be part of your site community, "wow really" doesn't do it for me either.
Later,
-- John (Matt's father) Diamond

We read them all. The auto response is simply so that you know we received your message. If we don't email you back personally, don't take it personally... it's impossible and not practical. We'd have to chain Mr. Smyth and Mr. Abeyta to their desks, feed them caffeine through an IV and wire their eyes open. We're not sure their families and friends would like that. But, then again, it would make an interesting experiment... -- C

it wasn't an opinion it was a bunch of questions...read it!!! like what ever happened to jovantae? is the bubble behind mike's ear gonna pop or what? why was koston so bummed at the es premeir in ny, is it cause the projector cut off half the video, or was he still upset no one knew he was kobe bryant for holloweeen? if fabry made a comeback would sheff beat him down? do you guys even read this shit or what? read the first one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-- Jim James

Jim James.. you again. Damn. you never give up, do you? Jovontae is living up in SF doing something or other. Mike's bubble will never "pop". Koston never gets bummed. Shef doesn't beat anyone down and, like I said, we do read this shit. Some poor fool's got to. -- C

-- Jeff

Not too sure about bowling. But the Rudy Johnson, "Songs Among Friends" Ruby 7" is basically sold out. The 2nd 7" is on its way... we won't say who it'll feature yet, but it's a good one. Maybe in the future we'll release them all on CD. -- C

Hello Crail Tap.
I love what you are doing with your magazine it's so fresh!!!! Your graphic designers show such talent and creativity. The reason for my email is I was wondering what Rudy Johnson is doing these days? Is he still on DC Shoes and will he be appearing in the new Girl Video?
Thank you
-- Norman Price, somewhere in England

Rudy's great. Skating the secret Girl park a lot. Taking care of his new boy, Diego. Making music. No, he's not on DC anymore. Who is? Yes, he'll be in the Girl vid. -- C

Thanks for having Wrench Pilot info. I'm an old-schooler who never did skate to be cool, never had the talent, but I have fun. Wrench symbolizes anti-crap. It's honest, bizzare and true. I read Wrench when i used to buy Transworld, long ago. I still have some that I ripped out before I tossed the mags. They're cherished. Now I can read the whole thing, for the first time.
-- Dave C.
P.S. Gonz is still alive?

Thanks for the kind words, Dave. The Gonz will ALWAYS live. Though he IS still actively skating, that's the thing about people like him (legends)... their exploits are captured on film and video and print and in our collective psyche, so he'll live on forever. Long live Mark Gonzales! -- Mel Bend

MIKE'S UGLY STICK
From: Timmy
To: librarian@girlskateboards.com
Subject: Fake Deck
Date: 12/4/00
I was skating back in the day when Guy Mariano was still riding for Powell. And I wasn't very good but I loved it. But when I got to my junior year in high school I quit because it was getting way too expensive and I thought nothing would be more pathetic than a 18 year-old riding around with a bunch of kids. Now eight years later I got over it, and I'm getting back into skating, cause I never stopped loving it. I logged on to the internet and start checking out different boards. So anyway I finally make my way to the Girl website and am checking out the Mike Carroll decks and I run across one that almost made me fall outta my chair. That Rainbow Board was kick a$$ but I read further and find out that it was a fake board for a contest :( Now the reason that I started skating was because I was gay and I liked the subculture feel of it and I know there was a whole lot of us (gay folks) that got into skating for the same reason (and probably the younger generations still do).
So here's the point, that Rainbow print is also the gay pride print (don't know if you guys where aware of that). Why don't you guys release it for real :) It doesn't have to be Mike's stick you could just make it a team board. It would be sic. I would snap that ish up and I know a lot of other people would too. Just a suggestion. Peace.
-- Timmy
P.S. Rollerblading aint gay, it's just plain pussy >:)

Wow. You know, we always figured there were gay skaters, but we also figured most of them would be scared to death to show themselves in the pseudo-macho world of skateboarding. For all the slack talk we give Jocks for stereotypically being so meatheaded and machomale, there's a set of skaters out there who are the same way. You may be the first gay skater we've known about. But, I gotta say, with apologies in advance, that board was UGLY. There's no way it'll see the light of day... it shall remain digital. -- C
