Q & A Section
From Kawika,
Q: I have a question for Justin Brock: How do you keep your glasses on when you skate?
A: What I do to keep my glasses on when I skate is when I get a new pair of glasses I make sure the arms bend so I can bend them around my ears. That works most of the time. They only fall off if I slam really hard whiplash style.Justin Brock

The Mini DV Drawer. Again, back to the early days of Fully Flared. Probably '05. Carroll downtown. MJ, Brad, BA, and Biebel up in Sac. Olson and Howard in the schoolyard. Guy on the quarter. Shit, even got a Brezinski clip in here. Additional filming by Cory Weincheque.

Q & A Section
From Blake Lindsay,
Q: I am not sure if this has been asked or not but how did MJ get so ripped? It is like Brad Pitt, Fight Club status. I know it is a New Year and I was planning on getting that 'As Seen on T.V. -The Perfect Sit Up' to maybe get the beer belly off. Plus does he still drink and smoke cigarettes?
A: I don't know if I would refer to myself as 'ripped'. Biebel says I'm more 'cut' because I have no body fat. As to how this current, strapping panther physique evolved, I skateboard six days a week, and maintain a vegan diet. I don't eat very often, but when I do, I eat like a horse with a feedbag strapped to my face. I'm that skinniest fat guy you'd ever meet. A total pig. But it's all healthy and mostly organic. No meat, no fast food, no candy, no bullshit from 7-11. I don't drink booze, but I do smoke. I smoke like hell. All day. Wow, some amazing ladies just walked by, dipped up to go out for the evening here in Hollywood. I dance. They probably work out. I sleep in a tree 18-hours a day and bust out some Tai-Chi before I shower and hit the streets. Lay off the beer if you want to get rid of the gut. My ways are my own. Find out what works best for you my friend. Be well, love yourself regardless, and laugh as much as you can.Marc Johnson

Q & A Section
From Ethan,
Q: Hey Atiba, what's it like to have Panda Bear name a song after you and are you looking forward to Tomboy, if it ever gets released?
A: Noah aka Panda Bear is a very good bro. The story is I started the song for the video and was having trouble. Noah being the coolest dude said send it to me I'll help you finish and he made a whole song. When I got it I knew it was a perfect fit for the video. It's the biggest honor having that track named after me. I'm a big Animal Collective and Panda Bear fan and psyched on all of the positive fed back of the track. The record drops April 19. Q & A Section
From Carlos Stich,
Q: What up, that red up and down box that you guys built and skated in Fully Flared looks hella sick. And I plan on building one at this DIY spot in New Orleans. I was wonder if you have any tips or pointers.
A: Don't use latex house paint if you want to paint it. Use spray paint. Slides better. Make a mock-up out of scrap wood and get it dialed before you commit to building the form. 7 degrees incline. Before you pour, fill the majority of the form with old wood, junk, rocks, cinderblocks, anything, so you save on purchasing and using actual concrete. You'll be pouring around and on top of all that junk so it will still be stable. Mixing concrete is a pain in the ass. Once you pour, use a trowel or a float to smooth the surface, then leave it alone for a week before you remove the wooden form. Concrete takes about 28 days to fully cure, so keep that in mind. And use Quikrete. Much easier for DIY. Once you figure the whole thing out, go hog wild. Make all kinds of different shapes out of concrete. We just barged it and it worked perfect. It's easier than you think. Hope all this helps, man. Have fun.Marc Johnson

Q & A Section
From Lucas Lipowec,
Q: To Brad Staba, I found a stack of old skate mags today, I flipped through them and came across the "Am I  Am" article in Slap March '95 featuring 15yrs old Staba. He answered the question, "What do you see yourself doing in 15 years? Still skating? " "Yeah, Totally." Since it's 2011 he obviously achieved his goal more or less. So Brad, let me now what's up with the next 15 years?
A: If Staba says he's going to do something, Staba does it! I'm not a big fan of letting people down. As for the next 15 years, I want to give back to skateboarding as long as I can. It's given me more than I could ever have dreamed of. I've said this before, but people who think skateboarding owes them something can fuck right off. From the minute you step on a skateboard you're on skateboarding's terms and in some sense indebted to it. Sink or swim. I would like to start a few more brands so I can filter some ideas I have that don't fit into Skate Mentals vibe. Can't always be shits and giggles. JK. Unfortunately at this time in my life there's no off switch in my brain. It's a blessing and a curse. But I hope in 15 years I'm alive, skating and thinking about the anniversary of you asking me this question.Brad Staba

A: My first good camera was a used Nikon f3, and I started buying lenses for it a long time ago, so I've stuck with them mostly because I don't feel like buying a bunch of new lenses. Digi wise, they're usually kind of behind Canon, but when they do come out with new stuff it's always really good. Plus they have awesome lenses and I think they feel a lot better to shoot with. A: Through Jon Favreau. It is always good to have friends in the movie business. Jon is married to my partner's best friend's sister. Real was supposed to produce the board for the movie but there was a lot of miscommunication during that time. I think they missed a big opportunity, but who is looking back. We only look forward. A: That graphic was inspired from one I owned myself a long time back. Just reminds me of every head shop I've been in. Every stoner on earth can connect with the image of a Honey Bear Bong. But getting older I'm spoiled by glass. So I try not to smoke through metal. But I'm always down to torch the back of my throat smoking out of an aluminum can. A: Good thing you asked me. Although I like to think I've got my ear to the pulse of SF, I've lived in LA for the past 12 years. Secondly, as high as I've been in the vicinity of it, I never dreamt of jumping on that fucking ledge. I don't think there's any bricks at the landing, in which case knobs wouldn't matter. A: I saw the Wu with ODB back in the day, and I have been listening to the Bad Brains since I was 13 so I got lots of history with both. It's a tough one cause both are music royalty, but I'm going with Bad Brains because with reggae and punk I get two for one. And they never made a song I didn't like. It's good to see they both still killin it. I would have went to Rock The Bells but saw Bad Brains at Sunset Junction with Fishbone opening, it was amazing.Atiba

Maybe you work a 9-5 job and have been saving up or have rich parents or friends in high places. I wouldn't know anything about that job part since I'm 31 and have never had a job in my life. And if somehow we meet you guys down the line. I'll fly to Philly to watch the games there and get far beyond amazing tickets because it's that easy. SHIT, I'll buy you one too! But that buster part was pretty funny man, haven't heard that one in awhile.  At the end of the day it's all in fun so I do accept your challenge and I do agree about fuck all those other team but I'm going to have to add the Phillies to that list. Now get back to work, or school or whatever. I'm going to Chief Chronic all day and skate. Gotta go. Xoxoxoxoxo.Brad Staba

Mini Top 5 (trad.)
Top 5 ways in which Pro Skaters and Porn Stars lead similar lives, by Chris Nieratko:
1. No one uses their real name. Try calling 411 and asking for Lizard King's or Belladonna's home number
2. Bang bus/tour van; same difference. Equally creepy
3. If you're ever gonna make it, you better be able to throw down backside tailslides on command
4. If either puts in a real hard day at work today, chances are they're going to see the doctor tomorrow
5. Both world's eat 'em alive and spit them out young. You're a cougar before you turn 30. The movie The Wrestler could have just as easily been about a pro skater or a porn star

Beauty and the Beast 3 videos up now!

With a plethora of scheduling issues and dubious obstacle designs, as recently as week before last, it was iffy if we were even going to be involved in Vans' Downtown Showdown. But with a little determination and very low expectations and one of the baddest Griptape teams in town, we pulled through a glorious victory as team Pretzel Grip (TNT, T-Mo, Pfanner, and Vincent) took it overall with Vincent winning for Best Pro. Q & A Section
From Harry,
Q: Did Mic-E Reyes really get arrested in the UK for stealing a ball from some little kids in that clip in the bonus footage from Krooked Kronichles [starts a 1:30 in]?
A: Yes, and much more. I was playing with the soccer ball, trying to keep the kids out of the bowl, cuz Drehobl was trying to film a trick. They would kick the ball in the bowl while he was trying to skate. Then I would get it and skate around the park with like 15 kids chasing me. I did it like 10 times. Then they mobbed me, and this girl tried to hit me with a board. She took a full overhead swing and I blocked it with my board. She broke her arm. They called the cops, told them I hit her with the board, so I got arrested and taken to jail for assault. Lucky for me our filmer checked the tape, came to the station and showed the cops. All the kids who made statements lied. Then the cops watched the tape and showed it to the dad and the kids! It showed her taking a full overhead swing at my head! She hit her forearm on my rail, and snap, broken arm. Then I was set free! Amazing!Mic-E Reyes

A: My friend Sam Spiegel (Squeak E Clean/ N.A.S.A.) made the song. I wanted it to feel Euro so he came up with the accordion theme. Thanks Sam! Maybe it was Amelie inspired? As far as the concept, Greg Hunt and I tried to get a very ambitious project off the ground back in 2003 with Spike. The 6 square idea was originally for that. It was going to be the same concept but in a bigger image size with more squares going on. Q & A Section
From Chris Costello,
Q: Yo Malto, give us the skinny on what exactly happened here?

A: That dude, the owner of the building we were skating at, fucking lost it. He pushed me and my friend, threw a sign at our car, and kicked the camera gear breaking a lens. So my friend Dillion stepped in and almost whooped his ass. We got the whole thing on film so I'm sure it'll be on the web or in a video soon.Sean Malto

5. Becoming TM at Girl and keeping me skating with a board every now and then

Mini Top 5
The Gav's Top 5 deep-fried treats
1. Nothing like Fried Chicken. I don't eat much food cold, I'm more of a re-heater, but cold Fried chicken reminds me of the ole lake days with my family. Best cold food out there. Please note that salt is critical for this item
2. Jalapeno Poppers are smoking, no pun intended. Be cognizant of the amount you consume in one sitting. I did 14 from Jbox they other day and all hell broke loose hours later
3. Mozzarella Sticks. I have a 9-inch rule with these and good one's have a melted cheese pull of at least 9 inches from your index finger/thumb and your mouth. Anything less is bad product
4. Fried Shrimp. These little devils need to be breaded and fried in order to have a good sitting. Cocktail shrimp are good if you shave your legs but nothing like a cocktail tarter dip with some fried little gems from the bottom of the sea
5. Crunch Roll. Middle of America probably is not too familiar with this but it's sushi deep-fried. Probably one of the biggest oxymoron's in the world of cuisine but makes the most sense when it hits your lips

Guess Whose Tent

Q & A Section
From Brian,
Q: This question is for Evan Hecox. Did you ever go to college for your art? How did you end up with Chocolate?
A: Yes, I did go to college. I grew up in Colorado and so I went to Colorado State University, which has a fairly good art program. I majored in art with a concentration in graphic design, but I really enjoyed my drawing, painting and printmaking classes the most. My first art and design job was working for a snowboard clothing company called Twist which was based in Boulder, Colorado and then it moved to San Francisco where I moved as well. My work started appearing in snowboard magazines which caught the eye of Andy Jenkins and Rick Howard at Girl and Chocolate and they asked me if I would be interested in doing some skateboard graphics. I grew up mostly just skateboarding and drawing, so it was a perfect fit for me.Evan Hecox

Q & A Section
From Keegan Henry,
Q: Guy, I recently got three screws and a plate in my ankle from slamming (riding a Guy deck). What do you do when injuries take you away from skating? (I'm pretty bored not being able to skate).
A: Sorry to hear that Keegan. There's a couple routes you could go. You could get an xbox or PSP and play video games or you could make up some quality time with family or your girlfriend that skateboarding usually takes you away from. You just have to be careful of what I like to call the "mid injury crisis" where you start spending money on some weird and wild hobbies that when you get back on your board end up in your garage collecting dust. Most importantly, when the time is right stick to a hardcore rehab program. Get well soon.Guy Mariano

Q & A Section
From Fletcher,
Q: Hey Guy, I just recently stopped smoking weed, it's been about a month. I have noticed how much better my life is now that I have stopped; doing better in school, becoming a happier person, and actually skating better! I still have the urge everyday to smoke again, but then I start to think about how it will just hurt me and the people around me again, but even worse this time. What I want to know is if you had to deal with the same thing when you quit drinking and what not?
A: To be honest sometimes I'm hanging around people that are drinking, smoking and having fun and I get those same urges. I guess we have to play our tapes back in our head of our lives and how it affected us differently. I think the best thing to fight the urges is to surround yourself with some creative people that are doing productive things. Congratulations on your month. With more time the urges are fewer and farther between.Guy Mariano

From Devin,
Q: BA, I'm a rather large human like yourself and I keep breaking boards doing 3flips. Is there a trick to the trick.
A: Maybe you're landing with your feet too close? I don't know. Try and land bolts, or just wait till your board is old before you even try even one tre flip. But I hear you, man. I didn't do backside heelflips for years when I wasn't sponsored, cause that trick cost me hella money. Nah mean? It's like your tre flip costs 46.50 with grip.Brian Anderson

Q & A Section
From Daniel Wheatley,
Q: Busenitz, what kind of stone is your portable bench made out of, and how much did it cost? I'm tryin' to hook up a local ledge spot and am sick of the DIY ledges with angle iron.
A: The bench is made out of a plywood frame with 3/8 thick granite tile glued on it. The granite cost me 9 dollars per square foot. Don't get marble because it's too soft and it will stick when you try to grind it. I've used basalt before and it works good too and is cheaper than granite. Since this is all natural stone it's never exactly the same. Buy a sample tile and see how it grinds before you buy the rest of it. When you're done building the ledge get a stone file and round the edge to help break it in and keep it from chipping. Good luck.Dennis Busenitz

Q & A Section
From Pedro Kim,
Q: I noticed that when Rickk is about to do something mischievous anyone in his immediate vicinity runs for their lives. How deadly and effective is the butter knife?
A: Well to put it in baseball terms, Rickk's batting percentage is about .999, how's that for effectiveness? The reason anyone nearby is running for their safety is because, chances are, you're about to get fucked up. He's yet to kill anyone/anything, but he came pretty close to putting me in a coma by hucking a full tall-can of Fosters from 20 yards away and hitting me in the back of the head, instantly splitting open my scalp. Of all places, he did it at Disneyland, Paris. No longer the happiest place on Earth in my book.Eric Koston

Q & A Section
From Andrew Viles,
Q: What's Rudy tripping out on today?
A: Actually the other night I was tripping on the fact that I've been playing the guitar for about 23 years now. And I remember when I was starting I would say out of frustration "I can't wait till I'm like 35 imagine how good I will be then." Now I'm here and sure enough I can blow a couple of minds here and there. Throw me any key, octave, chord progression, scale, etc., I'll do that shit with my eyes closed.Rudy Johnson

A: Definitely the one most recently, in Germany. Fell about 9 feet to my face. Don't drink and drive. I started S.A.D.S. Skaters Against Drunk Skating. Nah, I just gotta be more careful. Couple of beers is fine. I had a few too many and my calculations were off. Learning experience.Brian Anderson

Q & A Section
From G$,
Q: Marc Johnson, do you ever think you'll design graphics again like  you did  when you were on enjoi?
A: I don't know if I will ever design graphics on a regular basis again to that extent, but occasionally I mess around with Photoshop and Illustrator. I didn't keep up with the constant upgrades for those applications so I'm getting used to the new versions. I might do a graphic here and there at some point, but it's always nice to see what Evan Hecox and the Art Dump have been cranking out. They pretty much have it dialed.Marc Johnson

Q & A Section
From Michael Pangelina,
Q: Chris and Mikemo, I know you guys were big fans of CoD4, I was just wondering if you guys got as much into Modern Warfare 2 and how you feel about Bad Company 2 trying to steal MW2's crowd.
A: Modern Warfare 2 is the sickest. It's the COD World at War that sucks ass. I never played Bad Company, I'll stick with COD.Chris Roberts
Definitely am really into MW2. It's a great game. COD4 is amazing though. The only thing that bothers me about MW2 is that the AK47 is at level 70, and when you go prestige you barley get the chance to use that damn gun! I've heard good things about Bad Company 2, Ako and Atiba have been trying to get me to jump on. But I think my hearts set on MW2. Q: Hello Mr. Smyth, according to your Skater's Eye section in the 2009 Thrasher photo issue you're pretty handy with film cameras. But my main question is how do you go about developing your film. Do you get places like CVS to do for you or is it D.I.Y. process?
A: Used to go to A&I till they bumped their shit up. Now I go Samy's. They do a great job for a fair price, and they named the place after me. I still drop hella cheese on this hobby of mine. From Evan Kim,
Q: Reda, for the World Cup are you going to root for America or Italy? Like me, I'm gonna cheer on Korea since that is where my family is from but I would also cheer on USA if Korea were to lose.
A: I'm gonna root for 'Merica baby! I usually like to root against  any team my Euro friends are rooting for. For example, I always root against the British, The French and if Italy and 'Merica go head to head in the finals, I will sit next to Federico and root for 'Merica. If you recall last World Cup, technically 'Merica won, since we were the only team that did NOT loose to Italy. For all my French friends, "Italy didn't cheat! They won fair and square!" For all my French people, you lost! Deal with it! But everyone remembers the head butt, no one remembers the guy who put the ball in the net during the free kicks. I definitely don't want Korea to win, thats for damn sure!Reda

From Mr. Dandee,
Q: When will BA's Epicly Later'd episode finally be featured?
A: I'm told it will start in the next few weeks. It's really out of my hands. I wish we could keep cranking them out, it makes me really happy when new shows go up and kind of depressed when they don't.Patrick O'Dell

Here it is. Fucking finally. Girl's Open House Contest Number 8.

CURRENT ENTRY
2/8/10

We were hoping to get the Open House video up today but it'll have to wait until tomorrow. Sorry y'all.

Black and white? Lots of Grain? Moodyness? Looks like Alex Olson is this week's Guest Front Page Poster.

Friendly reminder that the entire Girl team, plus a couple of filmers, a photo dude, and Smyth of course, are going to Australia next week. So if you're in the area, or just need an excuse to get out, here's where we'll be.

Lakai has posted an Out of the Box segment with MJ trying out some new shoes at our place.

Hershel waited in line at the Apple store all night just to be the first to get one.

There's something about sword and skateboards this week.

Q & A Section
From Danny Hamilton,
Q: Yo BA, you stoked on the Saint's win last night? Cause you were repin' the Drew Brees jersey in New Orleans in the Mapquest Fourstar video. Go Saints!
A: Ireally superstitious before games and I never say "We are going to win!" Or anything like that. I just kind of rock back and forth like when I was little and Hulk Hogan was losing a wrestling match. I put all my energy into the TV and just hope. Dude that interception was priceless and beyond feel good. Well deserved. Drew is a humble man. Good stuff.Brian Anderson

Q & A Section
From Benson,
Q: Smyth, what's the easiest way to cut somebody from a team?  Do you have an e-mail template I could use?  Shit's tough when you're dealing with homeys.
A: It's not you, it's me. Of course you're ripping. I know. The recession though, you know?Smyth

From Kevin Sekaquaptewa,
Q: Hey Koston, how do you feel about McDonalds one upping you and offering 50 nuggets as opposed your usual 40?
A: People have been tryin' to steal my shine for years now. Whether it's the town hero at a demo or a mega-corp like McDonalds, they're all tryin' one-up me. It's only made that much more resilient. McDonalds don't scare me, wait till you see how many nuggets I fuck up in my next video part. If I've said it once, I'll say it again. "It ain't easy being Frost!"Koston

From Andrew O'Brien,
Q: What's shoe was Mikemo using in his little day in the life clip for the final trick?
A: It's my shoe, but its just a sample color way, those wont be in production.Mikemo

From John Escalante,
Q: Hey Ben Colen, how did you take that loss this past Sunday [Lakers vs. Celtics]? I hope Rickk's not too harsh on you.
A: I didn't get to watch it but I was still pretty bummed. Rickk's actually usually really mellow about those things. The people who talk the most shit are Justin, Daniel and Jeron, but I think Jeron forgot to give me shit about it today. Gavin is the dude who texts me the second the game is over. He's pretty harsh. Oh and Koston loves to tell me how the C's got their faces fucked too.Ben Colen

Q & A Section
From Matrick Swayze,
Q: McCrank, what's your go-to vegetarian protein?  Tempeh, tofu, seitan, or some next-level VIP stuff?
A: Good question, so many people think it's so hard to get protein as a vegetarian, it isn't at all. I tend to go for some nice marinated tofu, black beans and brown rice is a fantastic source of tasty protein. Seitan is a wheat gluten food and gives me worse gas than Rickk's.—McCrank
